General notification for families that a person in the school program community tested positive for COVID-19
Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Public School Saturday, January 16, 2021
Dear Families,
We were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) that a member of the Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Public School community has tested positive for COVID-19. No dates have been identified for potential school community spread. We cannot for privacy reasons share details about the person. At this time, they are staying home and/or working at home until they are well and can no longer spread the disease.
We have worked with MDH and local public health to identify those who were in close contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19, and no close contacts have been identified in our school community.
If you have not been contacted, your child is not considered a close contact, and there is nothing special you need to do.
Because the spread of COVID-19 from unknown sources is widespread in Minnesota, you should continue to watch your child for COVID-19 symptoms, which include:
Fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
New cough or a cough that gets worse
Difficulty/hard time breathing
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
New nasal congestion/stuffy or runny nose
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Muscle pain
Extreme fatigue/feeling very tired
New severe/very bad headache
Chills
If your child gets symptoms, they should stay home and you should talk with their doctor or other health care provider to decide if they need to see a doctor and/or to get tested for COVID-19. Please review the following resources:
Home Screening Tool for COVID-19 Symptoms (PDF) (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/homescreen.pdf)
COVID-19 Attendance Guide for Parents and Families (PDF) (https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/attendance.pdf)
We understand that this news may make people feel uneasy. We have taken action to clean and sanitize the building and are working closely with MDH to watch the situation. We are asking all members of our community to lower the chance of spreading illness by taking the following actions:
Protect yourself and others by wearing a face covering.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Cover your coughs and sneezes; do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
If you are sick, stay home from school, child care, sports, and other activities.
Clean all commonly touched surfaces often, such as telephones, doorknobs, countertops, etc.

Just a friendly reminder of what our January Calendar looks like!

100th WIN
On Saturday, January 16th, senior, Garret Eiynck recorded his 100th win with the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds. He pinned the wrestler from Border West (Wheaton-Herman-Clinton-Graceville) in the first period. “I’m just glad we got to wrestle this year.” Garret said. “It was really hard ending the year last year with 99 wins.”
Garret has become the 18th winningest wrestler in Mahnomen/Waubun wrestling. “He still has a whole season to go” coach Short said. “If he has a good year, and we do not have any cancellations, he could move up to the 6-7th spot.”
Congratulations Garret.

Jaelyn was chosen as Student of the Month. Her teacher, Mrs. Oertwich says, “I chose Jaelyn as my student of the month for December. Jaelyn is responsible, gets her work done as soon as possible, and asks for help when needed. She often asks for extra work and wanted work to do over Christmas break. Jaelyn approaches everything with a positive attitude and prides herself on her work. Not only does Jaelyn do her best and challenge herself academically, she consistently displays empathy to her classmates when they need extra academic support and encourages them when they are down. Keep being a great leader, Jaelyn.”
Jaelyn is most thankful for fishing with her family: Daddy, Mommy, Dustin, Erin, Jordan, Kimber, and Kase. She said Dustin catches the biggest fish and she catches the smallest fish. Jaelyn’s favorite part of school is playing hide and seek at recess with her friends. She also loves riding on the scooter in gym class. Jaelyn loves to play Subway Surfers on her iPad and likes to play dolls at home. Jaelyn can do cartwheels, somersaults, swing on the bar, walk on the balance beam, and the splits at gymnastics class! Wow!
Jaelyn you are amazing!!! We love you at Ogema Elementary!
